Can Leopard Geckos Eat Scrambled Eggs?

Can Leopard Geckos Eat Scrambled Eggs?

When it comes to a leopard gecko’s diet, you can safely stick to the rule: if it’s not the food the gecko would normally eat in nature, don’t feed it to your pet in captivity. In other words, most leopard geckos will not eat scrambled or boiled eggs. Rather stick to live insect feeders such as roaches, mealworms, and crickets because leopard geckos normally eat food that moves.

Hi Tracey — The gecko is likely to eat insects like small crickets from the pet store. However, it won’t eat if it doesn’t have a supplementary heat source to help it thermoregulate, since it’s a cold-blooded animal. That being said, if you’re just waiting a few days for the weather to warm back up, keeping it in the container for a short while with just water should be fine, even without food or supplementary heat. Just make sure to release it back into the wild as soon as the weather improves.

Today we found a gecko in our house. I gather it came in when we let our dog out, as it’s freezing cold out and wanted to get warm. I’m leery to put it back outside as we are expecting heavy snow and negative wind chills, so we have it in a safe, breathable container with a dry washcloth to hide in and a bottle cap of water. Is there anything we can feed it until it warms up enough to let it back outside? It seems somewhat young. We don’t have access to any food it would naturally eat and I don’t want to leave it roaming the house as my dog would munch it up in a heartbeat if she saw it loose. Roads are too icy to go anywhere to get it food.

Hi Brian — Feeding your gecko only once a week is not appropriate, so we’re glad you’ve come to that realization. Young geckos (less than 6" long) should be fed daily, and geckos larger than that (adults) should be fed every other day or every three days, depending on their body condition. In the meanwhile, offering scrambled eggs as an “emergency” food is not going to hurt your gecko. Just make sure that they are dusted with calcium powder and not cooked with oil, salt, or other spices.

My leopard gecko got and injured when i found him under refrigerator. Hes young and feed him 10 crickets a day once a week. Now that i been reading up on it that is not the right diet for him. Its been about a week since i fed him. I feel horrible. I bet hes hungry. The stores are closed to get crickets so i will get them in morning. I put cooked scrambled eggs in there and he ate it. Is it going to hurt him
