*NOTE: THE HORNWORMS SHIPPED MAY DIFFER IN SIZE FROM THE PICTURE SHOWN ABOVE.
KEY INFORMATION: We often ship smaller worms to ensure they survive transit better and give you control over when to feed them. Smaller worms indicate a fresher batch. Don’t be concerned about their initial size; hornworms grow rapidly. Opting for large over medium means more food is included to support their growth to a bigger size.
Our medium hornworms come in a 12-count, 8oz cup. These are cost-effective “economy” cups unique to us, meant for quick feeding as they aren’t designed to grow very large or store excess food in this container.
Hornworms are the larval stage of the Hawk Moth/Sphinx Moth (Manduca sexta). In nature, they consume leaves of plants like tomatoes, eggplants, and tobacco, often becoming garden nuisances. Yet, in captivity, they serve as excellent nourishment for reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates that eat insects.
Nutritional Breakdown:
- Moisture — 85%
- Protein — 9%
- Fat — 3.1%
CAUTION: Avoid feeding wild hornworms to your pets due to the toxic plants they consume in nature, which can harm your animal.
How frequently should hornworms be fed?
Hornworms can be a regular part of your pet’s diet, but they shouldn’t be the sole food source. Ensure a balance by feeding more varied insects alongside hornworms. Since hornworms are lower in protein and fiber, overfeeding them may cause loose stools. A diverse insect diet will promote healthier digestion and balanced nutrition for your pet.
Is calcium dusting necessary for hornworms?
Hornworms typically have a favorable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, so there’s no need to dust them with calcium before offering them to your pet.
Guide to hornworm care:
Each cup includes 12-24 worms and sufficient food to grow them to 1.5-2" within a week. They might arrive small, but their growth is swift!
The provided cup acts as a complete habitat for hornworms. Upon arrival, invert the cup so the lid is at the bottom. The worms will climb to the food via the screen, and waste will collect on the lid for simple cleanup. Ensure the lid has ventilation for proper airflow.
We ship smaller worms to guarantee freshness and allow you to control their growth rate. For rapid growth, maintain a temperature above 80°F; for moderate growth, keep at 72°F; for slower development, store at 50°F.
