Different reptiles need different amounts of humidity in their environment. Some, like desert species, do well with low levels of humidity. Others, like jungle species, need much higher levels.

Hygrometers are used to keep track of the humidity levels at different places in a reptile's enclosure. This helps you make sure that your reptile is enjoying a healthy gradient of humidity that it can use as needed.

If you don't measure the humidity levels in your reptile's habitat (especially for high-humidity, tropical species), then you may harm them by letting the humidity get too low. Without a hygrometer, you won't be able to tell the difference, and this can make your reptile sick or even kill it!
